Major Vijay Rattan Chaudhary  Maha Vir Chakra  IC-11004

Major Vijay Rattan Chaudhary was born on 9th July, 1939 in Ambala district, Haryana. His father's name was Dr. M. D. Chaudhary. Major Chaudhary was commissioned in the Indian Army on 14th December, 1958.

1971 India-Pakistan War: On the night of 11/12 December, 1971, the movement of tanks was disrupted near Chakra town when a trawler got bogged down in the nullah running across a minefield. At the same time the Pakistanis were regrouping to launch a counter attack on the captured town of Chakra. Therefore it became very important that the movement of traffic across the minefield was restored. Major Chaudhary started on the work to clear the lane despite coming under heavy enemy fire. Displaying utter disregard for his personal safety, he personally supervised the work, moving from man to man giving instructions. Due to his brave leadership while under heavy enemy fire, the traffic was restored and tanks and other vehicles could move into the town.

He also cleared major minefields at Thakurdwara Lohra and Basantar river, in addition to one at Chakra of 1000 to 1500 yards. While supervising the clearing of minefield lane near Basantar river, this tireless and brave officer was killed due to enemy artillery fire. Major V R Chaudhary displayed exceptional devotion to duty, extraordinary bravery and made the supreme sacrifice. For his role he was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra (MVC) posthumously in December, 1971.
