ii) Appointed as Minister for Social Welfare ad Transport during G. M. Sadiq's regime in 1967. iii) Appointed as Minister for Local Bodies, Housing and Cooperation during Mir Qasim's regime in 1972. iv) He was elected as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of J & K in 1980 when Late Jenab Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah was the Leader of the House. v) He was again appointed as Minister for Finance and Power in Dr. Farooq Abdullah's Ministry in 1982. He remained Member of Legislative Assembly of J&K till 18th Jan, 1990 when the house was dissolved. vi) Appointed as Member Advisory Council to Governor, J&K by His Excellency G. C. Saxena in 1991 and continued till 1995 during the Governorship of General (Retd) Shri K. V. Krishna Rao during the peak militancy period. vii) He assumed the charge as the Governor of Haryana on 19th June, 2000. Important contributions: Besides active role in politics, he took public life (with details) great interest in promoting the cause of ruralites and literature especially for the down trodden. He remained President of Bharatiya Dalit Sahitya Akademi J&K for a period of two years. He also served as Director of Jammu and Kashmir Bank Ltd., Jammu Rural Bank, Jammu, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Corporation and Khadi Board to promote the cause of the weaker sections for 12 years. Distinctions/Honors: He was awarded Dr B. R. Ambedkar National Award by the National Bharatiya Dalit Sahitya Academi in 1991-1992 for his distinguished service rendered for the cause of the downtrodden humanity. This award was conferred on him by His Excellency the then Vice-President of India Shri K. R. Narayanan. He had a bright career at the University and got distinctions (fourth positions) in M. A. Economics and L. L. B. Degrees. Publications: He is working on his autobiography and details memoirs. He has contributed many outstanding articles in different languages on various subjects to some reputed publications of the country. He remained Editor-in-Chief of a Journal "Voice of the Depressed" and voiced forcefully through his pen for the cause of the economically weaker sections of society in this publication. Hobbies: Rural Development, Gardening, Agriculture, Study and Social Service. Other information: After attaining the excellent organizational and administrative skills in politics and public life, he has been able to achieve the highest public office as that of a Governor and has ever been striving constantly for social justice to the poor, dalits and the needy. He is a strong believer in spiritualism and has firm faith in the theory of "Sound and Light". He believes that 'sound and light' is the true philosophy of life which can lead our life towards spiritualism and an enlightened master is necessary to train us in this theory. |
